Noise and Safety Notice for Upcoming Military Training at Base Gagetown

October 23, 2019 – Oromocto, New Brunswick – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
Throughout the month of October, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, will be conducting Exercise ROYAL RISING, a Combat Team level live fire exercise.

On October 27th and 29th, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, with enabling units from Petawawa will be conducting live fire training throughout the Range and Training Area to include the use of tanks, demolitions, and artillery. The public is advised that there may be a steady and continued level of noise during the day and at night from this training.

From November 3rd to the 5th, Royal 22nd Regiment from Valcartier will be conducting live fire training throughout the Range and Training Area. The public is advised that there may be a steady and continued level of noise during the day and at night from this training.

The attached maps show the impact areas in grey and the live fire training areas for these two activities in red. We remind the public of the importance of not trespassing into the Range and Training Area. This is an important safety matter. Those who wish to partake in recreational use of the Range and Training Area must first contact Range Control at 506-422-3121.

As Canada’s second largest military base and premier army training centre, Base Gagetown plays an essential role in the Canadian Army’s long term operational health. Above and beyond our training mandate, we have units that are required to maintain an operational readiness level such that they can deploy anywhere in the world when called upon to do so. As a result, our Range and training Area is well utilized with many units, of both Regular and Reserve Force, conducting training and operational readiness verification annually.

Routine training activities involving armoured vehicles, artillery weapons, demolitions, small arms ranges and helicopter flights will generate noise. We remind local citizens that cloud cover is a factor that often increases the intensity level of noise. On a clear day, sound waves propagate into the atmosphere and eventually dissipate but on a cloudy day, sound waves are redirected off the clouds back to the ground and therefore result in a raised noise level. We understand that such instances can impact the communities in vicinity of Base Gagetown and we thank the public for their continued support and understanding.
